Taking street photography style photos in Rome

My very first visit to Rome was during a bus tour with Trafalgar Tours that took me to many different countries in a short space of time. They provided lots of optional activities like street walking tours which was a great way to learn your way around a big city like Rome.

Rome is the capital city and a special commune of Italy. Rome also serves as the capital of the Lazio region. With 2,879,728 residents in 1,285 km², it is also the country’s most populated commune. It is the third most populous city in the European Union by population within city limits.

I did two walking tours while I was visiting Rome, one in the night time and another during the day with each one creating a very unique way to take photos of this beautiful city.

Taking photos in Rome of major attractions

Rome is busiest during the day with thousands and thousands of visitors arriving by train, bus or airplane to explore the city’s various major attractions. Like many others have said it is a large open air museum with so many historical sites mixed in between modern buildings, shops and roads.

Taking photos of these attractions in Rome can be difficult with so many people walking around and the mistake that many people make is to try take photos that don’t have anyone in them.

The approach I take is to compose my photos to include people who are walking, looking at a historical site, eating or simply enjoying the city. This type of street photography creates photos that put everything into perspective where you can see people in relation to statues, fountains and other objects to create not only relativity but a sense that ‘you are there’ as you look at the photo.
