Get end of life pet dog photography in Sydney

I am a dog owner, so I know how hard it is when it gets near the time to say goodbye to your best friend. It is one of the most heartbreaking experiences any pet parent or child can face.

I lost my dog Chilli in January 2025 and now I want to help other dog owners by taking photos of the precious moments you have together. Candid, natural images that capture your love, compassion & bond.

Beautiful photos can become a celebration of the time you have shared with photography sessions done in the comfort and privacy of your home or at your chosen outdoor location either on your own, with family, children or other dogs.

For end of life, terminally ill or elderly pets, I offer special photo sessions in Sydney dedicated to celebrating the life of your pet and family. These sessions can be scheduled at short notice if needed.

Professional photography in Sydney for a dog and owner

As a devoted pet parent myself, I understand just how much your furry companion means to you—they are family, your constant source of love, comfort, and joy. You cherish every moment with them and wish you could have more time, more memories, more chances to hold them close. But the heartbreaking truth is that our beloved pets won’t be with us forever, and capturing the bond you share becomes all the more precious.

Yet, it’s not always easy to document those special moments. You long for heartfelt images of your dog with you and your loved ones, but you’re often the one behind the camera. Taking natural, candid photos that truly reflect their personality and the connection you share can feel impossible—frustrating selfies and awkward snapshots never quite do them justice.

That’s where I can help, I offer professional pet photography designed to honour your pet’s place in your life, creating timeless artwork that preserves their spirit forever. In a relaxed, natural setting, I can capture the love, the laughter, and the unbreakable bond you share, so you never have to rely on fading memories alone & to aid the grieving process.

Why choose me as your end of life pet photographer?

White Lodge at Hyams Beach holiday accomodation photo by Le Lente Photography

I’ve been a pet parent too.

My biggest regret was not taking more photos with my own dog Chilli before his life ended. Yes I know what you are thinking, but while I have hundreds of photos, the realisation that I didn’t have many of him and me together really hit me later, I wished I had more.

I’ve been a photographer for many years and enjoy the challenges that comes with trying to take photos in a natural environment. Although that is typically the best way to create photos that are memorable, relatable and meaninfgul.

A pet photographer in Sydney with great reviews

I’ve been fortunate to receive some wonderful reviews as a photographer in Sydney, here is a sample of what people have said from more than 200 testimonials received.

“I engaged Paul for some classic car photography services on a vehicle I was putting to auction. The communication and level of professionalism from the start was impressive, but more impressive was the quality of images. Expectations far exceeded, I look forward to working with you again in future.”

Because of La Lente, I will definitely be using your services in the future!! You guys will definitely be my go-to for photography! Thanks again for everything Paul – and i am very much looking forward to seeing all my images!”

“Highly recommended. Was a bit sceptical about how someone can have so many positive reviews but it is because it’s well deserved. Great photos, service, responsiveness and amazing value. Very happy with result. Thank you Paul and team.”

“So I have sold and bought quite a few cars over the years through Carsales. Presentation is the key to a good advert – let the buyer see what they are getting, stand out from others etc and this is where La Lente help your car stand out. High quality photos, high resolution mean that your car will look just that little bit (in some case a lot) better than the others.

I recently sold a car that I thought would take quite a while to move so that’s were the investment in some high quality photos, a cut above your shaky hand iPhone efforts came in. Sold on carsales in less than 24 hours and I’m sure the photos played a big part in that.

The good thing about Paul is that he is in to cars which helps the process.”

“La Lente captured wonderful moments from my son’s 21st birthday party. He has a great eye for special moments as well as quirky ones. So pleased not to have the pressure of taking photos myself! Would definitely use them again”

“A friend bought us a photoshoot for a gift after our baby girl was born. Paul was lovely, very professional and able to capture natural shots of our little family. He was patient with our keen puppy and was able to work with a fairly plain canvas in order to create some interesting frames. We were delighted with our photos, would highly recommend!”

“I got a gift certificate for my dad to have a photo shoot done of his car. Paul was exceptional! We had to reschedule at one point due to the weather and Paul was super flexible. On shoot day, everything was done flawlessly – he was precise with timing, very clear on what would work quite nicely and locations around the area. He was also great fun and made the session a memorable one – the photos were incredible and exactly what we envisioned! Would highly recommend La Lente for any photos you would like to get done – thanks again Paul!”

I recently asked Paul to take some business shots of me for my speaking , coaching and training business . We met in a cafe at Maroubra and after lunch he did a few snaps in the cafe and on a quiet laneway. Within 24 hours he sent me the final product and I bought all of his 38 photos of me . They were that good . Super impressed with Paul direct no BS style , his speed and value for money

During the shoot, his instructions were clear and easy to work with. The delivery of the photos were timely and very professional. Would definitely recommend La Lente.”

“It was great working with Paul. I could easily tell that he is very passionate about what he does. He was more than happy to work with my ideas on some of the shots on the day. His attention to detail and skills were hard to miss. Knowing all the right angles to go with different backgrounds and lighting helped in the amazing result.

I’m really happy with how the photos came out. Would definitely recommend La Lente to anyone.”

“We recently hired Paul to take photos of our retail location which comprises lifestyle, cafe, plants, garden. He was amazing. Did a thorough job in advance to know what we wanted so we could then work quickly on the day of shooting. He was self sufficient and worked quickly to get the shots done within our timeframe and budget. The shots he delivered were incredible and we literally chose everyone! Would highly recommend.”

Jessica Theuerjahr

“We were gifted a portrait session to celebrate our engagement. I was nothing but awkward but Paul and Lyn helped us to feel comfortable and create a more light hearted shoot. They ensured we left the day with photos we would love! Which we did!!! The turnaround was extremely fast and they offered us a fanatic deal to purchase more photos. Couldn’t recommended them any more!”

Frequently asked questions about
end of life pet photographer in Sydney

An end-of-life pet photography session is a deeply personal and compassionate experience designed to honour the bond between you and your beloved pet in their final days. Although our phones may be full of photos of your fur baby, quite often there’s actually not many photos of you as the owner and the pet together (it is one of the things I regret not doing more of while I had Chilli). So this is where a photoshoot becomes suitable and also a good choice.

These types of photo sessions are calm, unhurried, and centred around creating a comfortable, loving environment where you can cherish precious moments together while I take photos for you. They are typically booked for senior animals who are 13 years or older or for animals who have been given a life expectation timeframe from your vet.

What to Expect During the Session

  • A relaxed and supportive atmosphere – I have gone through the pain and grief of losing my own pet. So the photography session that I run are held in a place where your pet feels most at ease, whether it’s the comfort of your home, a favourite park, or a quiet outdoor space. There is no rush—everything is done at a gentle pace to accommodate your pet’s needs.

  • Candid and heartfelt moments – I don’t take photos in a studio, while that is a great location to use in some situations for end of life photography it is normally better to avoid posed shots and instead the photography is focussed on capturing the genuine love and connection you share in environments you normally spend time in, places that are familiar and will create happy, fond, relatable memories. This may include gentle cuddles, soft touches, favourite routines, or simply sitting together in a moment of quiet reflection or jumping on the bed together, whatever it is that you normally do.

  • Personalised touches – I encourage you to include meaningful elements, such as a special toy, blanket, or even family members and other pets, to create images that truly reflect your pet’s personality and the life they’ve shared with you in your environment.

  • Respect for your pet’s comfort – If your pet is unwell or in pain, the session is tailored to their energy levels, with plenty of breaks and adjustments to ensure their comfort at all times. On the flip side if they have lots of energy that is perfectly fine, everything we do is all about capturing them as they are, their personality.

  • A lasting tribute – The final images become a cherished keepsake, a way to hold onto the love long after they’re gone, ensuring their memory remains forever in your heart and home. In most cases these sessions are not about saying the final goodbye, but about celebrating a life well-lived and the profound love that never fades. We can also take photos at euthanasia sessions.

When I run an end of life pet photo session my goal is to capture as many portraits that I can with compassion and as little intrusion as possible so you can focus on recreating the little moments that we will take photos of to celebrate your best friend’s life. That is why it makes sense to prioritise your dog’s comfort and create a calm, relaxed environment either in your home or somewhere familiar where your pet feels safe and content. It isn’t a rushed session there is plenty of time for breaks and documenting real moments together.

My goal is to take photos that represent the special bond between you and your dog, from the look in their eyes, their ears, wagging tail or paws – telling a story about your dog’s unique personality in a loving, respectful way.

End of life pet photography is typically done during the final stages of a pet’s life, when owners want to preserve meaningful memories before saying goodbye, there is no specific time period for this as it will be a time that makes sense in relation to where the dog is at in their life stages, most commonly though we get asked to take photos when;

The dog has been given a terminal diagnosis – When a pet has been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness, owners often schedule a session while their pet is still comfortable and able to enjoy the experience.

When mobility or health begins to decline – As pets age or experience mobility issues, such as arthritis or organ failure, a session can be arranged before their quality of life significantly diminishes.

Before euthanasia – Many owners plan a session in the days or weeks leading up to euthanasia, ensuring they capture loving moments before saying their final goodbye.

During a “Good Day” – Even in the midst of illness, pets often have good days when they seem more energetic or comfortable. These moments provide a beautiful opportunity to capture them feeling happy and loved.

As a celebration of their life – Some pet parents choose to book a session as a way to honour their pet’s journey, not just at the very end, but as a tribute to the love and happiness they’ve shared over the years.

Ultimately, the best time for an end-of-life pet photography session is when your pet is still comfortable enough to enjoy the experience, allowing for heartfelt, natural moments that will become treasured memories. The most common terminal diagnoses that lead to a dog being put to sleep (euthanised) are typically those that severely impact their quality of life and cause significant pain or suffering. Some of the most frequent reasons include:

  • Cancer – One of the leading causes of euthanasia in dogs, particularly aggressive or late-stage cancers such as lymphoma, osteosarcoma (bone cancer), and hemangiosarcoma. These can cause pain, internal bleeding, or organ failure.

  • Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) – A progressive and irreversible condition that leads to kidney failure, resulting in lethargy, severe dehydration, and loss of appetite.

  • Heart Failure – Congestive heart failure (CHF) is common in older dogs and breeds prone to heart disease, causing fluid buildup, difficulty breathing, and extreme fatigue.

  • Severe Arthritis & Mobility Issues – While arthritis itself isn’t fatal, advanced cases can lead to debilitating pain and an inability to walk, especially in large or senior dogs. When pain management is no longer effective, euthanasia may be considered.

  • Neurological Disorders – Conditions like degenerative myelopathy, brain tumours, or advanced cognitive dysfunction (dog dementia) can severely impact a dog’s ability to move, eat, or recognise their surroundings.

  • Unmanageable Pain – Whether from injury, disease, or age-related degeneration, chronic pain that cannot be controlled with medication often leads owners to make the difficult decision to euthanise.

  • Liver Failure – Chronic liver disease or acute liver failure can cause severe weakness, vomiting, seizures, and organ dysfunction.

  • Severe Respiratory Diseases – Conditions such as pulmonary fibrosis or collapsing trachea can make breathing extremely difficult, causing distress and discomfort.

  • Uncontrolled Seizures – Frequent or prolonged seizures (epilepsy, brain tumours, or other neurological conditions) that no longer respond to treatment can lead to suffering and poor quality of life.

  • Gastrointestinal Disorders – Advanced conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), stomach or intestinal cancers, or megaesophagus can prevent a dog from properly digesting food, leading to malnutrition and pain.

Your dog can be an absolute energetic ball of energy or very shy and quiet, either way I can take photos of them as they are. Let’s remember that dogs are living, breathing creatures just like us and in lots of situations they won’t do exactly what we’d like them to do especially when strangers are around or they can sense something is happening that is out of the ordinary. So as a pet parent and dog owner even I know they will never really do what we want, when we want sometimes, although that is perfectly fine.

Every dog has its own personality and by doing an end of life photo session in your own environment they will feel more comfortable and probably be better behaved too.

For energetic dogs we can burn off some of that with some action photos of them running, catching a ball or playing. For dogs that are a little more shy we can being slowly until they get a little more comfortable, I can even use a zoom lens to keep my distance until they feel relaxed. Eventually we will end up with a selection of photos that are posed, candid and action shots.

During an end-of-life pet photography session, a variety of heartfelt and meaningful photos can be created to celebrate your dog’s life and the bond you share. These may include;

  • Close-up portraits – Gentle, soulful images highlighting your dog’s expressive eyes and unique features

  • Candid interactions – Natural moments of love, such as cuddles, pats, or nose boops.

  • Family portraits – You, your loved ones, and your dog together in a relaxed setting.

  • Paw detail shots – Close-ups of their paws, especially in your hand, symbolising connection.

  • Snout or ear close-ups – Focusing on the little details that make them special.

  • Favourite activities – Your dog enjoying a beloved pastime, such as lying in their favourite spot, playing gently, or simply being near you.

  • Soft resting moments – Peaceful images of your dog lying down or being comforted in a quiet embrace.

  • Silhouettes or backlit shots – Artistic images capturing their shape in a beautiful light.

  • Looking into the distance – Symbolic shots of your dog gazing into the horizon, evoking a sense of reflection.

  • Holding their favourite toy or blanket – A sentimental touch that highlights their personality.

  • Final loving gestures – Kisses, nuzzles, or shared eye contact between you and your pet.

  • Pawprints in the sand or grass – A symbolic image representing the impact they’ve left on your life.

  • Lifestyle or in-situation photos – A typical scenario like sitting on the bed, walking together or other things you would do in your normal routines.

The idea is to create photos that are carefully taken to honour your dog’s unique spirit and the love you share, creating a lasting tribute to their life in scenarios or environments that you are familiar with and will remember fondly. This is normally more meaningful than creating studio created photos that look like promotional photos.

As a dog owner I couldn’t think of anything more cold or manufactured than a photo of my dog Chilli on a plain white background. Sure it would be an amazing photo of him, but it doesn’t tell a story of his life or how he lived. End-of-life pet photography is an emotional and deeply personal experience and choosing the right setting can make a significant difference to the comfort of both your pet and yourself. A home or familiar environment is often the best choice compared to a studio for many reasons;

  • Comfort & security – As pets age or face illness, unfamiliar places like a photography studio can feel overwhelming or stressful. Being at home or in a familiar outdoor space ensures they feel safe, calm, and at ease.

  • Authenticity & sentimentality – Your home is where your pet has spent their life—where they nap in their favourite sunny spot, rest on their beloved blanket, or sit beside you on the couch. Capturing these moments in the place they love adds emotional depth to the images.

  • Less physical strain – Travelling to a studio can be tiring or uncomfortable for a senior or unwell pet. At home, they can rest as needed, ensuring a stress-free session that prioritises their well-being.

  • Natural & candid moments – A home environment allows for more authentic, unscripted interactions. Your dog can be themselves—whether snuggling up to you, enjoying gentle pats, or simply resting peacefully in their favourite spot.

  • Soft & meaningful backdrops – Rather than an artificial studio setting, familiar surroundings add warmth and personality to the images, making them even more meaningful when you look back on them. Could be your local park, cafe or backyard.

  • Easier inclusion of family members – Other pets or loved ones can naturally be part of the session, making it effortless to capture the deep connections your dog has with everyone in their life.

Ultimately, end-of-life photography is about honouring your dog’s journey with love and respect. By choosing a home or familiar setting, you create a peaceful experience that allows for genuine, heartfelt memories to be captured—ones that truly reflect the life they lived and the love they gave.

Photographers in Sydney will charge different amounts for dog photography and the reason for the variance is due to a combination of 3 main factors;

  1. The photographer’s experience – usually more experienced people will charge more than those who are just beginning their photography career.
  2. The package inclusions – some photographers will charge for the time taken but also include photo editing or even a few prints as well.
  3. The type of session offered – some photographers might have a studio so you have to travel to them with your dog, others will come to your location so there are different lengths of time & complexity needed for either scenario.

What are the costs usually made up of?

A photo session fee
  • This is typically the base cost to have a session with the photographer for a nominated period of time in a specified location. For example as of 2nd February 2025 Pawtastic Photography offers a session for $200, which includes a 1-2 hours of photography time at your specified location while Pawtraits and Pawprints charges $195 for a 90-minute outdoor session at a selected location in Sydney with Sydney Dog Photography provides sessions starting from $150 which includes three digital images while La Lente Photography provides a 1 hour photo session with five digital images for $197 inc gst

Digital images and prints
  • Many photographers in Sydney will not include digital images as part of their photo session fee, generally you have to pay to purchase digital images individually while others like Wild Pet Photography provide a package that includes two printed portraits for $449. a print and the digital images.
  • It’s important to keep in mind that you can print a 12 x 18 photo at Officeworks for just $14 so do your research to try and compare the costs of prints vs the photo session time.

Additional optional extra costs
  • Once you determine the photo session cost, the base package inclusions and costs for digital files or prints you can then compare the optional extras.
  • These might included things like including more pets or family members in the session, traveling beyond a certain distance from their base location, getting specialty products like albums, wall art, or high-end prints made.

At the end of the day the biggest difference will be the cost to hire the photographer and the rest can then be easily compared as they are fairly common items offered by all businesses. So your decision making will eventually boil down to the quality of their photography portfolio and overall costs for a session with some included digital files & prints.

As a pet owner who is now dealing with the grief of losing my best friend of 15+ years I can say hand on heart that pet photography is worth it.

While I have hundreds of photos taken on my mobile phone of Chilli, I don’t have that many of him and I doing things together and now that he is gone I regret that deeply. So while you have the chance, yes, pet photography is worth it to have high quality photos taken of you engaging with your pet in a natural way for for those who share a deep bond with their pets.

It offers a way to create lasting keepsakes that honour their place in your life.

  • Capturing Precious Memories – Pets are with us for a short but meaningful time. Professional photography ensures their love, personality, and presence are beautifully preserved, giving you cherished images to hold onto forever.

  • Professional Quality & Timeless Keepsakes – Unlike quick phone snapshots, professional pet photography produces high-quality, well-composed images that can be printed, framed, and treasured for years. A skilled photographer knows how to capture the unique quirks and expressions that make your pet special.

  • A Stress-Free Experience – Getting great photos of your pet can be difficult, especially when they’re full of energy or camera-shy. A professional photographer creates a relaxed, pet-friendly environment, using experience and patience to capture natural, candid moments without stress.

  • Celebrating the Bond You Share – Whether it’s a playful session or an emotional end-of-life tribute, pet photography highlights the deep connection between you and your furry companion. These images serve as a reminder of the love, trust, and joy you’ve shared. If your pet is an important part of your family, professional photography is a beautiful way to celebrate their life and create lasting memories that will stay with you forever.
